Orthodontics for Children

A Healthy Smile Starts Early

Early orthodontic treatment is important and can eliminate the need for extensive dental work and/or oral surgery in your child’s future. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that your child’s first appointment with an orthodontist is around the age of 7. Treatment may not begin at this time, but we can create a plan to address orthodontic issues and begin orthodontic treatment around age 8 or 9.

Dr. Greg Nalchajian and Dr. Nicole Nalchajian provide our youngest patients with orthodontic treatment options that prevent the development of more difficult and complex problems. We treat patients of all ages at both of our offices in Fresno, CA, and Clovis, CA. Contact Nalchajian Orthodontics today if it’s time for your child to see an orthodontist.

Does My Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?

This is a question that we often receive from many concerned parents and one we can only answer with a comprehensive evaluation. We offer consultation appointments free of charge and will be able to determine your child’s specific orthodontic needs at that time. However, some signs may indicate that your child is a candidate for early orthodontic treatment. If you notice any of these signs with your child, we recommend contacting our office for an appointment:

  • Losing baby teeth too early or late (your child should start losing teeth around age 5 and should be finished losing baby teeth around age 13)
  • Problems chewing or biting
  • Thumb sucking after age 5
  • Mouth breathing
  • Speech impediments
  • Protruding teeth
  • Crowded front teeth
  • Shifting of the jaw when the child opens or closes their mouth (crossbite)
  • The teeth don’t come together normally or at all

Keeping an eye on your child's dental development is important. Even if your child does not require orthodontic treatment now, it’s beneficial to undergo an evaluation to make sure the teeth and facial structures are developing properly. If you have any concerns about your child’s dental development, please contact our office for a complimentary consultation.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment for Children

There is no perfect age to begin orthodontic care, only the perfect age for your child based on his or her specific needs. Phase one treatment starts between ages 6 and 9 when the child begins to lose baby teeth. The goal of this phase is to create room for permanent teeth and ensure the jaw develops properly. This can include the use of retainers, spacers, a palatal expander, or other devices.

After there is enough room in the mouth for adult teeth, phase two treatment begins. This is typically when the child is around 11 years old and aims to correct bite problems while aligning the teeth. Treatment may include braces or clear aligners, depending on the severity of the issues.

Early orthodontic treatment can reduce future treatment time and prevent the need for costly and extensive procedures, such as corrective jaw surgery. Our team at Nalchajian Orthodontics creates a fun and educational environment for kids where they can feel welcomed and cared for by every member of our team. We make orthodontics a fun and beneficial experience, and we invite you and your family to receive the treatment you need from experts you can trust.
