3D Scanning

Advanced CBCT Scanning and Digital Impression Technology

Traditionally, dentists and orthodontists used X-rays to capture images of a patient’s jaw, teeth, and face. While many practices still utilize X-rays, they are limited in terms of the amount of detail and maneuverability because they are only 2-dimensional. At Nalchajian Orthodontics, we use advanced cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning technology at each of our offices in Fresno and Clovis, CA.

These machines give Dr. Greg Nalchajian and Dr. Nicole Nalchajian a 3-dimensional look at your teeth, jaws, soft tissue, and nerve paths. During the scan, a motorized arm rotates 360 degrees around your head. It captures multiple images from different angles that are then reconstructed to create a single 3D image. We can move the image around and view your condition from virtually every angle. This is especially helpful when it comes to creating treatment plans.

Benefits of 3D CBCT Scans

This highly sophisticated scanning technology allows us to diagnose and treat our patients with great precision and predictability. There are numerous benefits to 3D scanning technology, such as:

  • Improves diagnostic confidence
  • Reduces the risk of complications
  • Non-invasive
  • Provides enhanced and interactive images of your condition
  • Provides details of soft tissue and bone structures
  • Precise, safe, quick, and clean

The Planmeca ProMax® CBCT scanner that our office uses offers less radiation exposure overall, including:

  • 80% less exposure than a full mouth series of digital dental images
  • 95% less exposure than a medical head CT scan
  • 50% less exposure than a one-way, cross-country airline flight
  • One CBCT scan’s exposure is approximately equivalent to two images that are traditionally required by orthodontists

Dr. Greg and Dr. Nicole stay on the cutting edge of orthodontic care advancements. This means utilizing the latest technology to ensure the most accurate treatment plan and comfortable, custom-fitted appliances.

Intraoral 3D Scanning

3D intraoral scanners are hand-held devices that digitally capture the structure of your teeth and gums quickly and comfortably. These radiation-free wands take a digital impression of your teeth and jaw. From these digital images, we can create a model of your teeth and map out your entire treatment plan. 3D scanners help us take digital impressions for Invisalign®, braces, and many custom-fitted oral appliances such as retainers or palatal expanders.

Results are instant with a 3D scanner, which means less wait time to receive the appliances from an outside laboratory. Instead, the information is captured and sent digitally from our office to the laboratory on the same day.

Using CBCT Scanning to Diagnose Airway and Behavioral Problems

With these detailed images, Dr. Greg and Dr. Nicole can detect craniofacial abnormalities and airway problems, which could have an impact on behavior or cause sleep apnea. In children, CBCT scans are beneficial in understanding the complexity and course of a child’s cleft lip or cleft palate.

Upper airway problems are a serious concern for preschoolers and older children. The most common cause of these issues is an obstruction in the nasal passages, which leads to the development of an abnormal respiratory tract. With CBCT scans, we can evaluate the airways and detect the presence of airway pathologies. This can help diagnose more serious problems and ensure your child receives the necessary treatment sooner rather than later.
